On the third Friday in a row that Jonathan Swann ordered only one meal, lasagna, from Marisa’s Bistro instead of the lasagna and spaghetti carbonara he had ordered every Friday for the previous three years, Priscilla, the Uber Eats delivery driver, brought two dinners, Jonathan’s lasagne and an eggplant parmigiana for her because she knew how it felt to eat alone.
How long should a story be? Most of my stories are about 1,000 words, but now and then something a lot shorter (or a lot longer) wends its way through my mind. I especially like one-sentence stories because of the challenge of capturing a character’s entire life between the sentence’s first letter and period.Â
