One could either infer that the narrator also had racist thoughts or that the cola only made people believe they heard others' thoughts and he dumped his first girlfriend for nothing. Also, human minds pour our an enormous amount of conditioned garbage on a daily basis. We don't necessarily believe everything that enters minds. I think the ability to overhear other people's' mind drool would be an unhealthy burden!
