A scorching breeze blew in from the open window, launching the papers on Mayor Granger’s desk aloft.
Jake caught them in mid-air and handed them to the mayor.
“What are we going to do with you, sheriff?” Granger’s chair squeaked as he leaned back. “Crime in Luna, Arizona’s down to zero, but we’re hurting for money. The council thinks we can get by with a constable at half your salary.” Granger wiped the smirk off his face with the back of his hand. “You’ve done too good a job.”
The shot from Sheriff Jake’s gun reverberated along Luna’s still streets.
