That was a great ending! I was not expecting it at all.
“A large pot bubbled in the fireplace, and I heard squeals inside it”. Okay here’s what I suspect; the Monopoly pieces act as temporary storage spaces for the souls that the witch collects. Once she uses up the substance in the pot, she removes the souls from the Monopoly pieces and places them into the cauldron. The souls are probably an ingredient for potions.
